"What is In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF)?
In order for pregnancy to occur, an egg has to be released from the ovary and unite with a sperm. Normally this union, called fertilization, occurs within the fallopian tube, which joins the uterus (womb) to the ovary.
However, in IVF the union occurs in a laboratory after eggs and sperm have been collected. Embryos are then transferred to the uterus to continue growth.
Andrology Clinic
Andrology clinic deals with health problems in men, more particularly sexual and infertility problems in men. It is the gender equivalent of Gynaecology clinic.
Sexual problems are universal. The incidence increases with increasing age of men. Sexual problems could involve, problems in erection, ejaculation or both.’ Some men may also have problems in sexual interest or libido.
Many men with sexual problems can be helped with current advances in sexual counseling and pharmacotherapy.
Sexual problems could also be early indicators of ‘Diabetes or vascular diseases.’ Many other medications could also impair sexual dysfunction.
Men with sexual problems need to be investigated for systemic and endocrine disorders before treatment could be planned.
Several new drugs have been discovered in the last decade, which have helped in the effective management of erectile dysfunction.
The advent of ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection - where a single sperm is injected into the oocyte) has revolutionised the management of severe male infertility. In many men with azoospermia, spermatozoa have been recovered from the testes/epidimymes and ICSI has been done successfully.
Male Infertility is an ‘untold story.’ Many men suffer in silence, unable to bear the burden of their barrenness. Help is on hand for many of these men with ICSI.
Andrology clinic would treat these infertility issues in a very sensitive manner.
The following facilities are available at JPMC:
Ultrasonic Follicle Tracking: Trans-vaginal scans are performed on different days of the woman’s menstrual cycle to establish exactly when she ovulates.
Ovulation Induction: Tablets and/or hormone injections are given to the woman to stimulate the production of a few eggs and then follicle tracking is performed.
Intra-Uterine Insemination (IUI): Semen quality is improved and enhanced by special techniques and injected in to the uterus bypassing the cervix to facilitate fertilization.
In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF):. This procedure involves the fertilisation of the egg by the sperm in the laboratory, culturing the resulting embryos for a few days and transfer into the uterine cavity.
Male Infertility (ICSI): Intra cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has revolutionized the management of male infertility. A single sperm is injected into an egg to achieve fertilization. Modern sperm retrieval techniques enable sperms to be obtained even when there are none in the ejaculate.
