Procedure
Patients having surgical procedures will be sent to the Pre-Operative Holding Area once the physician and the Operating Room are ready. There, a nurse and/or anesthesiologist will talk with you and make sure all preparations for your surgery are complete.
The scheduled time for surgery and the actual time in surgery can vary. Delays or revisions to the Operating Room schedule might change the start time of your surgery.
Depending on your care needs, you may be monitored with a heart monitor, blood pressure device and an oxygen sensor. If you are to receive intravenous (IV) medication, an IV will be started.
At the completion of your procedure, your physician will meet with you or call your family members. If you are having a cardiac catheterization procedure, the cardiologist may not meet with your family until after reviewing the films later the same day.
After the Procedure
If you have a surgical procedure, you will go to our main recovery room known as the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). Your condition will be monitored by a registered nurse and an anesthesiologist. When you are awake and stable, you will be transferred to an inpatient care unit or you will be discharged. A volunteer in the waiting area will notify your family and friends of your room number so they may join you.
Patients having non-surgical procedures will be taken to the appropriate post-procedure care area after completion of the procedure.
Going Home
If you are having your procedure as an outpatient, you must have a responsible adult drive you home from the medical center. If you have received anesthesia (including IV sedation, blocks, spinal, epidural or general anesthesia) someone should stay with you the remainder of the day and night.
Please follow all instructions given to you by the medical center staff and your physician. If you have any questions, please call your physician.
