Nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and members of the public took to the fields yesterday when The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) hosted a Nurses and Midwives’ Day at the capital’s Taman Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien. This event, organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Institute of Health Sciences, Persatuan Jururawat Negara Brunei Darussalam (PENJURU), The Brunei Cancer Centre and The Brunei Neuroscience, Stroke & Rehabilitation Centre, was held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale and to mark the devoted contributions of Nurses, Midwives and other Health Professionals.
Close to 500 nurses, midwives, healthcare workers and members of the public participated in the Nurses and Midwives’ Parade yesterday led by the Executive Director & Medical Director and Director of Nursing of JPMC. This was the highlight of affair, which also included treasure hunts, a blood donation drive, free health assessments and basic life saving demonstrations carried out by students from the Institute of Health Sciences on site.
This year the “International Nurses’ Day”, held internationally on the 12th of May, carries the theme “Nurses: A Voice To Lead, Achieving Sustainable Development Goals”. While International Midwives’ Day (5th May 2017) theme this year is “Midwives, Mothers and Families: Partners for Life!”
“The primary objective today is to also include Midwives and other Health Professionals alike. Through today’s activities, we hope to embed the messages that the themes bring from the past into the present and to the future of this noble profession. Whether they are nurses, midwives and other health professionals at RIPAS or JPMC, we hope a collaboration of this nature would extend to their work place ensuring areas such as patient safety would be addressed and would be at par with recognized international standards”, said Chung Yea Fui, the Director of Nursing of JPMC.
JPMC has just recently been awarded their second accreditation by the Joint Commission International, the 1st for any health institution in the country.
Yesterday’s event was part of a series of events organized in conjunction with the International Nurses and Midwives Day. The next event in the series will be held on May 17th when Universiti Brunei Darussalam hosts IDMND Forum at the PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences building.
